What is the meaning of the furniture term Ferrule?

A ferrule refers to a ring or cap made of metal or plastic that is positioned on the end of a chair or table leg. Its purpose is primarily decorative but it can also provide protection to the bottom of the leg and help increase stability. Ferrules are often used to add a stylish finishing touch to furniture and can come in a variety of designs and materials like brass, chrome, or rubber. Metal cup or ring, turned or square, fitting the foot of a leg for ornament and strength.
