What is the meaning of the furniture term Cornice?

Horizontal top or finish molding of a piece of furniture. A decorative element at the topmost portion of the furniture. A cornice refers to a decorative molding or trim that is often found at the top edge of cabinets, bookcases, or other enclosed furniture. It usually projects outward and adds a finishing touch or visual interest to the piece. Cornices can be simple or ornate, depending on the style of the furniture.
